I thought I'd start this blog off with an introduction to what I call rancADs, and this particular one has been building for some time now. To clarify, a rancAD is an advertisement that I believe is bad, really bad, extremely bad...or shall I say, rancid...
Example #1 GEICO

I would NEVER invest in GEICO insurance, I don't know anything about their policies or pricing, I don't know how the company is run or how much I would save if I switched from my insurance to theirs. What I DO know is that their advertising is AWFUL! The cutsie gecko...annoying, the voice-over commercials...annoying, the caveman...annoying, and the new "kash" character....you guessed it...annoying!!
Are they trying to target 13, 14 and 15 year olds??? It seems like it from the ads, but my 23 years of life experience tells me that this target is not purchasing insurance for themselves. Its not necessarily the "characters" cast in their commercials that make them annoying (I'd buy Aflack), its the humor, the voices, the incessant showing of the ads on TV...on EVERY channel and in the newspapers and on the back of magazines, EVERYWHERE you look there is GEICO.
OK I admit it, the ads are memorable. Anyone and everyone recognizes a GEICO ad at first glance. Yes, recognition is a big part of advertising. BUT in my book, what they don't have is an image of reliability. Allstate...now there is an insurance company that screams reliability in every one of their ads.
Bottom line: Unless you are selling insurance to children, DON'T use kiddy humor and annoying "characters" in your ads! Recognition is not everything, especially in more serious situations...such as buying insurance.
That's all for now, don't worry, there WILL be more :)
